What is a DB15 Connector?
According to correct I/O connector nomenclature, the D-sub 15 pin connector is typically either a DA15 or DE15 connector. However, the overall DB15 title has stuck — even though it’s technically a misnomer. That’s why, to help clear up any confusion, we want you to understand a bit of electronics history, including how D-subminiature connectors first got their name.
Back in the early 1950's, the very first series of D-subminiature connectors was introduced. In this system of connectors, the prefix “D” has always stood for the D-shaped — or trapezoidal — shell surrounding the pins. The next letter in the titling system — A, B, C, D or E — is a reference to the five different shell sizes that are typically chosen in relation to the total number of pins or sockets that give the connector its numerical name following the first two letters.
For a pin configuration of two rows with one 8 pin row and a 7 pin row, an “A” shell size is used. It results in a DA15 connector. For a pin configuration of three rows of slightly offset and more densely located 5 pin rows, an “E” shell size is used. It results in a DE15 high-density connector.
However, since early personal computers switched from using the common DB25 connectors to other sizes and forms of connectors, many people confused the D-sub title with the DB title. For this reason, the DB15 connector is still commonly understood in the industry to be synonymous with either a DA15 or DE15 connector.
It’s also helpful to note that if you see a “P” or an “S” following a D-subminiature’s title, the “P” stands for pin, otherwise known as a male connector, and the “S” stands for socket, otherwise known as a female connector.
DB15 Connector | HD15 Applications
DB15 Connector, D-shaped rectangular d-subminiature connectors, are used in countless end-use industry applications from computer peripherals to more ruggedized environments like portable hand-held computers, medical scanners/printers, industrial equipment, transmitters, remote sensors & data loggers. Contact us directly if there is a custom or semi-custom db15 connector project need that is not listed in our standard product offering above.

One of the DA15 connector’s most well-known uses is as the game port on personal computers. When it comes to the DE15 high-density connector, one if its most common uses is as a video graphics array or VGA connector — although as far as video applications are concerned, it can support higher resolutions, such as SVGA, XGA, UXGA and more.
